Know Your Physio
Knowing your physiology, the very science that makes you who you are, is the best thing you can do to optimize your health, bolster your performance, look and feel your best, and enjoy a longer and more fulfilling lifespan. My dedication to this field derives from a selfish place born out of necessity before it became the bright, selfless passion I'm known for. It was through my health journey (mainly battling ADD and ten years of Adderall dependency plus related side effects) and love for the scientific method that I found my way. Eventually, with the right knowledge and mentorship, I stumbled upon an enhanced state of awareness between mind, body, and spirit where healthy intentions met actionable steps and lasting, positive lifestyle change. Today I call this "physiological intuition," and to me, it's a right that every human being deserves to thrive with, without having to battle themselves or pursue a degree to discover it. Every day I spend on this planet, I get to connect with world-leading experts on my podcast and learn more of the substance I wish I could have gotten my hands on earlier, for YOU to apply and enjoy total mind and body fitness, personal mastery, and self-actualization! The more you #KnowYourPhysio… Enjoy the show!

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another episode, another solo episode of the Know Your Physio podcast. I'm your host, Andres Burchel, helping you discover your science to optimize your life. I'm a physiologist, neuroscientist, and data-driven, evidence-based health coach, which sounds very pretentious, but the reality is I'm a huge nerd, and I love figuring out how to apply science to help people just like you, tuning in on a daily and weekly basis. And today we've got a pretty interesting show because I want to dive into a question that came to mind for me. Yesterday I was fly fishing here in the Roaring Fork River in Aspen, Colorado. I realize that I'm in a very unique situation and while it may seem on the surface level like this podcast is only for the top 1% of the 1% of people, really it's not. It's for anybody because there's a lot that we can learn from these people and apply in our own lives to live better, to get healthier, more effectively, and more sustainably. And for those of you who don't know, I've had the pleasure of working with now countless, extremely high net worth families, executives, CEOs, folks that are worth billions and billions of dollars. I've worked with world champion athletes, everything from Le Mans 24-hour racing champions to World Series of Poker champions to US Open Tennis, Grand Slammers, you name it. I've worked with all kinds of people. And there is something that the wealthiest and most successful people have in common. And it's that they approach their health like they approach any other area of their life. They are masters of the art of delayed gratification and masters of building systems. And they are also pretty much obsessed with solving the problems that are furthest upstream of anything and everything else so that everything that falls downstream of those bigger problems is taken care of ahead of time. So they're not reactive, they're in fact extremely proactive and I think more of us can do this to feel better, perform higher, live longer. So, as I said, I was on the Roaring Fork, and this is a place where I often think, ponder, and reflect while I'm knee-deep in some cold water with my waders, and it's really like one long meditation. The bonus point is, well, I've gotten pretty good at catching trout. I've been doing it for 18 years now with the fly rod, and it's nice, you know? So, anyway, when I asked myself this question on the river yesterday, I asked myself, You know, why do billionaires, some of the most widely successful and influential people on the planet hire me to be their health coach? When I asked myself that question and eventually gained the insight, I knew I had to get out of the water and make this episode. So here it is. So why do these people hire me? And more importantly, what can you learn from the way these people think about their health? Well, here's what I've seen time and time again. The most successful people in the world, whether they're founders, CEOs, creatives, or philanthropists, they don't approach their health like most people do. They're not interested in the hacks or in chasing a six pack or trying to biohack their way into feeling good enough. They've already done what most people think is impossible. And whether you're a billionaire or not, whether you're fond of billionaires or not, I think there's a few non-negotiables that we can agree on. You are wealthy in proportion to the size and complexity of the problems that you solve. Solving big and complex problems requires thinking differently and solving these problems is not something that happens overnight. It can take years, decades, even generations. So these folks are certainly experts in the art of delayed gratification and in saying no and understanding how distracting instant gratification is. So they've solved these huge problems. They've built massive companies. They've influenced cultures, economies, and they've led thousands, if not millions of people, but they've also paid the price. They're willing to sacrifice everything in their life for their business, for their impact, to help others. even their health. Their nervous systems are taxed. Their energy is inconsistent. Their sleep is shallow. Their minds are often restless, even when everything looks successful on paper. And, like most humans, at some point, they realize, if I don't start prioritizing my health the way I prioritize everything else, it's all going to catch up. Not in the form of a number on a scale, but in the form of not being present with my family. Not being able to make clear, rational decisions. Not having the energy to show up fully for the next chapter of my life. And when they hit that point, they look for someone who gets it. Someone who's not gonna throw another meal plan or fitness app at them. Someone who can think at the level that they operate at. And yeah, well, that's where I come in. See I approach health the same way that they approach their business and This is because of my personal experience with my health journey having taken a head roll for for a decade as a young person and all of the I mean Consequences that came with that, you know being absolutely skeletal having a stutter no confidence No friends being totally isolated getting no sleep surviving off of one and sure shake a day Realizing that there's this thing called neuroplasticity The idea that I can change and upgrade my brain and becoming obsessed with all the underlying mechanisms, you know Learning about exercise physiology sleep nutrition Supplementation circadian biology, you know going to school for this exercise phys psychology nutrition neuroscience, etc and realizing that I had to solve for bigger problems rather than treat and the superficial symptoms to get by. And then over the years, that personal selfish obsession becoming a selfless mission to help others do the same without having to struggle the way I did. So having the firsthand experience and then seeing what this could do for other people. So I learned to approach my health from a similar perspective as these people approach their businesses. What are the bigger problems we need to solve? What kind of specific knowledge we need to gain and leverage to solve these problems? And how can I create a plan and a system that allows me to put one foot in front of the other for the next 10, 20, 30 plus years? And how is this going to help serve other people along the way? Don't ask me where I gained that wisdom when I was in my, you know, late high school and early college years, but I just knew that if I could do it for myself, that would eventually pay off. And of course, in the process, becoming obsessed with data. with numbers, because numbers and data don't lie. Anyway, like these people, I don't like to treat the symptoms, and we like to go upstream. We don't make decisions from a reactive perspective, but a proactive one, and we build systems around being proactive. We don't optimize for the next 30 days. We optimize for the next 30 years. And more importantly, we don't make decisions based on mood. We make them based on the mission. Because here's the thing, the smartest and most successful people in the world, they've mastered the art of delay gratification. They're not seduced by short-term wins. In fact, they are most likely turned off by them. These are the last people that are ever going to pursue a get rich quick scheme. They're not jumping into surgeries, extreme diets or semaglutide injections just to see the number on the scale drop. Sure. Some of them will do that and it can pair with a lifestyle intervention, but that's not what they're, that's not what they really want. They've seen what happens when people optimize for superficial metrics. It always backfires because if you're just chasing a quick dopamine hit, whether it's through food, caffeine, social media, porn, video games, or some kind of performance, you end up building a fragile system, a house of cards. And these people, they've already done that in other areas of their life. They've burned out, they've broken down, they've learned the hard way. So now they want to solve the right problems, the deeper problems. the ones that no one else wants to touch, the ones that are hiding upstream, the ones that quietly shape their energy, their decision-making, their focus, their recovery, libido, sleep quality, and their sense of inner peace. And they want someone who can help them identify those problems, build a system around them. and remove the friction that's holding them back. And that's the work that I do. Now, here's what I wanna make crystal clear. You don't need a private jet or a nine-figure network to think like this. It's not even close. You don't need to be famous or followed. You just need to care enough to stop outsourcing your health to apps, to trends, to hustle culture, or to health and fitness influencers that don't know what the fuck they're talking about. And you need to be willing to think differently. Think of the bigger problems you need to solve. Because most of what's out there, from counting macros, to fasting, to clean eating, to taking this and that supplement, and endlessly stacking them, it's not solving the root issue. And it can even distract you from what the real problem really is. while giving you the illusion of control. And what these high performers have figured out, and what you can borrow from this is that health is a long game. It's not about what you can tolerate, but what you can sustain. And the most valuable health habits are the ones that you don't even need to think about. The ones that you can quietly, slowly, but surely stack and compound over time. That's the difference between discipline and structure, between force and flow, and between constantly managing your health and finally being supported by leveraging your health to do more of what you're good at and only you can do. So if you're listening to this and you've been burning out from trying to do everything right, doing all the things, living and relying on caffeine or other stimulants just to function, feeling like your health is either a side hustle or a never ending to-do list, I wanna offer you a different lens. Start solving for the root, not the symptom. It's gonna take deep inner work. Start measuring success, not by how strict you are, but rather by how free you feel. and stop optimizing for short-term changes if what you're really looking for is long-term, sustainable results. The real flex here and the real ROI, return on investment, is not abs or low body fat. That will eventually come downstream of these bigger problems. The real flex, the real ROI is peace of mind. It's the ability to be fully present in your life and your relationships and your purpose without your health getting in the way. In my opinion, that's what health is actually about. So whether you're leading a team, raising a family, building something important, or just trying to feel a little bit better every day, I hope this helps you reframe what health can actually look like and do for you. It's not a punishment, it's not a sprint, it's not another area to hustle in. It's about building a system, thoughtfully, strategically, sustainably, so your health becomes the foundation for everything else that you care about. That's the path, and obviously, what I'm here to do is to help you walk it. So thanks for listening. Let me know if you have any questions.
